The Rockets Redglare Award for Independent Achievement
In 2003, The Arlene’s Grocery Picture Show commenced an annual
tradition by honoring an “artist” whose body of work represents
the independent spirit of the festival. The award is called the Rockets
Redglare Award for Independent Achievement, named after a beloved
and bedeviled Lower East Side comedian/bodyguard/film actor who, when
it came to artistic independence, never said die until he did.
The award is formally presented to her during The Groceries on
Monday Night May 16, 2005but the recipient is honored during the entire
festival.
